Chuncheon City is considering a plan to move up the timing of next year's World Taekwondo Cultural Festival to avoid the hot weather.
Chuncheon Mayor Yook Dong-han held a press conference at the press center in the festival site on the 22nd and said, “We will consider the timing of hosting the three world competitions promised to be hosted by the World Taekwondo (WT) and avoid hot weather.”
This year's festival was held in mid-August and suffered operational difficulties due to the heat wave, such as the start time of the outdoor game being adjusted to the evening time due to the late heat with the highest daytime temperature exceeding 30 degrees. As the daytime games were reduced, the number of visitors decreased, leading to disappointment in attracting customers to the food zone.
Accordingly, the city is considering holding next year's festival in early July and plans to discuss this with the World Taekwondo (WT) later.
Due to local lodging conditions, it is inevitable to hold the festival in July and August during the vacation period in order to distribute thousands of overseas participating athletes to university dormitories. The city and the festival organizing committee have already informed foreign athletes who participated this year that next year's festival will be held in July.
