Chuncheon City succeeded in attracting the headquarters of the World Taekwondo (WT).
The World Taekwondo (WT) held a temporary executive committee meeting in Seomyeon, Chuncheon on the 18th and decided to host the WT headquarters in Chuncheon. At the 2023 Gangwon-Chuncheon World Taekwondo Cultural Festival held at Songam Sports Town in Chuncheon on the 19th, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Governor Kim Jin-tae, Chuncheon Mayor Yook Dong-han, and WT President Cho Jung-won signed an agreement, confirming Chuncheon's hosting.
The WT headquarters will be located in Songam-dong, Chuncheon, and will be built with 1 basement floor and 4 floors above ground. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed in 2027. Founded in May 1973, WT is the representative international sports federation for Taekwondo with 213 member countries around the world. It is also the world's only Olympic Taekwondo event negotiating body approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In addition, at the temporary executive committee held on the 18th, the agenda of holding three types of World Taekwondo Championships (World Taekwondo Octagon Diamond Games, World Para Taekwondo Open Challenge, and World Taekwondo Demonstration Competition) in Chuncheon for three consecutive years was also passed.
